Why and how to weld rails ?

- To avoid shocks when passing over the rail joints. This also eliminates punching of fixing holes on the rail ends and the induced vibrations.

- Rail splice joints do not give a sufficiently stiff and smooth link between rails : it is even not possible to link some overhead crane rails with splices (DIN 536 rails for instance).

- The butt welding of rails allows the best use to be made of the advantages of the soft fixing system : GANTREX has the experience of continuously welded rail lengths in excess of 1000 m.

- Various welding methods are described in the chapter "rail welding".
